Retail sales in Canada experienced a significant increase of 1.2% month-over-month in November 2025, marking the largest rise in five months and recovering from a 0.2% decline in October, according to preliminary estimates. In the previous month, sales dropped in four of the nine subsectors, primarily due to a downturn at food and beverage retailers, which saw a notable decrease of 2.0%. This was especially pronounced among beer, wine, and liquor retailers, which experienced a substantial 10.6% decline, largely attributed to labor disruptions in British Columbia. Additionally, sales fell at clothing and accessories stores, including shoes, jewelry, luggage, and leather goods retailers, by 0.7%, alongside a decline in health and personal care retailers by 0.3%. Sales at gasoline stations and fuel vendors also decreased by 0.8%. Conversely, sales increased at furniture, home furnishings, electronics and appliances retailers by 1.1%, as well as at motor vehicle and parts dealers, which saw a 0.6% uptick. Overall, on a year-on-year basis, retail sales grew by 2% in October.
